It was inscribed on the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2005 and included in the first batch of China’s national intangible cultural heritage in 2006. Known in Mongolian as “Urtiin Duu”(literally “long song”), it is characterized by its lengthy and gentle tunes, intricate and varied ornamentations, and free andimprovisational rhythms. Themed around the grasslands, galloping horses, and love, it is hailed as a “living fossil of grassland music”.
Rooted in the nomadic traditions of the Mongolian people, the long song carries the historical memory and ecological wisdom ofthe Mongolian ethnic group. Its unique performance style, wide vocal range and metaphorical lyrics bear the distinct imprint of nomadic culture. Traditionally, the long song lacks a fixed beat; instead, it expresses emotions through the technique of “Nogral”—a trembling vocal ornamentation. It is frequently sung improvisationally during festivals, weddings, or grazing process, reflecting the philosophy of harmonious coexistence between humans and nature.
As a cultural treasure of the Mongolian people, the long song has achieved remarkable progress in the contemporary era. Modern music technology has facilitated its dissemination: digital production has enabled it to transcend geographical boundaries and draw audiences worldwide. Musicians have innovatively blended it with pop, rock, and other genres of music, creating new works that broaden its audience base. Meanwhile, inheritance bases have been established to train young artists, ensuring the transmission of this ancient art form. Additionally, cultural festivals, competitions, and other events dedicated to the long song have enhanced public awareness and appreciation of this art form, infusing it with new vitality in the new era. Today, it serves as a vital bond for ethnic unity and cultural inheritance.
China’s ethnic minorities are renowned for their musical and dance traditions. They havecreated a diverse array of artistic achievements over time. These are invaluable cultural and artistic treasures of the Chinese nation. It is imperative to protect and develop them, allowing them to bloom more brilliantly in the garden of Chinese culture and arts.
