Nanshan Lake Scenic Area is located 30 kilometers southwest of Shengzhou City, Zhejiang Province. It is one of the source streams of the Shanxi River. It is connected to the Changle River in the lower reaches and converged in the Caoe River. In 1993, it was approved as a provincial-level scenic spot by the Zhejiang Provincial Government. The lake has a total length of 11 kilometers, with an area of 4,000 acres, surrounded by ancient trees, having beautiful sceneries. The southwestern part of the lake is historically known as the Shuangxi River. Li Qingzhao, a great poet of the Southern Song Dynasty, once lived and boated there, leaving a popular poem entitled “Wulingchun”: “Just afraid of the big Shuangxi river can't contain my sadness.” It was also one of the birthplaces of Neo-Confucianism in the Southern Song Dynasty. Zhu Xi and Lv Guishu once created academy schools for teaching.

　　The Nanshan Lake Dam is magnificent, with four kilometers of lakes and mountains. The scenery is very charming and spectacular. The dam is 72 meters high and the top of the dam is 242 meters in length. It is an earth-and-stone structure that is artificially built. The height of the earth dam is rare in the country. Looking from the bottom of the dam, more than 400 stone steps rise like a ladder to the sky. It was originally a large-scale reservoir built by the people of Shengxian County to solve farmland irrigation. The reservoir capacity is 105 million cubic meters. Since it was built in the early 1960s, it has formed an artificial lake of 4,000 acres in the mountains.

　　It is said that in the mountains of Nanshan Lake once lived a carp elf. One year in the village, there was a severe drought, water was poured on the farmland. The elf that was being cultivated couldn't turned into human to go to the village, which made her worrying a lot. As a result, she use the magic to push the springs accumulated in the mountains to merge into streams, and spill them down the hill. The carp elf was transformed into a stone because of the overuse for her ability, and lied on the bottom of the spring forever. Before the Nanshan Reservoir was excavated, people could still see fish-like rocks in the pond and the temple built above the stone to show their admiration for the carp elf. (Promotion)
