Shipu Fishing Port City is located in Shipu Fishery Town, Xiangshan County, Ningbo City, Zhejiang Province. It is also known as Ligang, which is a northeast-southwestern direction. It is an enclosed crescent-shaped harbor with an area of 27 square kilometers and a depth of 4-33 meters. It can park 10,000 fishing boats and allow 10,000-ton sea-going vessels to sail. This calm harbor is one of the safest sheltered harbors known in the southeastern coastal area. With the functions of both fishing ports and commercial ports, it is one of the four major fishing ports in the country.
Shipu is one of the earliest birthplaces of marine fisheries in China. During the Qin and Han dynasties, there were ancestors fishing and hunting here. During the Tang and Song Dynasties, it became a well-known fishing trading port, a coastal defence fortress, and an important stopping point.
Shipu Fishing Port City is built along the mountain, facing the sea. Hence, people call it “the city upon the harbor and the mountain inside the city”. It is connecting to the fishing port on the one side and is buried deep in the mountain valleys on the other side. The wall of the city are built with ups and downs of the mountains. The gates are shaped depending on the structures. The high control of the harbor is the main characteristic of the majestic city of Shipu, the key city of coastal defence fortress.
Shipu Fishing Port City has crossed streets and lanes. Wanhang Street, Fujian Street, Middle Street and Backstreet composed of the old streets of Shipu. Wanhang Street has its name due to the fact that there were a lot of selling bowls on the street(wan means bowls). “The streets lie on the slopes and the steps are dense” is its characteristic. The ancients built this ‘S’-shaped street with a length of 147 meters and a height of 35 meters. Middle Street was built in the Ming Dynasty and was once a flourishing commercial street. There are more than 100 shops along the street, and several distinctive fire walls are built for fire and security. There are a lot of old houses on the back street, going through storms in the past hundreds of years. Walking along the old street, one would casually meet an old house or a historic site. The ancestors left their imprints and vivid memories in this ancient town. (Promotion)
