Chrysanthemum morifolium, also called Xiaotanghuang, feverfew, is a specialty of Tongxiang. It has a long history of cultivation in China. After Chrysanthemum morifolium is brewed by boiling water, the water is light green, fragrance overflowing. In ancient time, it was a tribute “Chrysanthemum morifolium” and always placed in the same category with “Longjin Tea”. The petals of Chrysanthemum morifolium are as white as polished jade, and the stamens are yellow, like pure gold. It has high medicinal value and the effect of prolonging life.
Chrysanthemum morifolium has been famous for its color, aroma and shape. So why it is called “Hangbaiju”(the Chinese name of Chrysanthemum morifolium)? Why is “Hang” in its name? It has a certain historical origin. In 1920s, Chrysanthemum morifolium of Tongxiang, Zhejiang was acquired by Wang Yutai, a tea merchant. He packed it and labeled with “Hangzhou West Lake Jinlun Tea and Chrysanthemum House” and sold it to South Asia countries like Singapore. Boss Liang, a businessman of South Asia received the Chrysanthemum from Wang Yutai and tasted it, and felt very good. The Chrysanthemums in the cup opened layer upon layer and looked nice. So, in the promotion of boss Liang, the demand of Chrysanthemum morifolium in South Asia increased with each passing day. Although it was the Specialty of Tongxiang, it was crowned with “Hang” and famous at home and abroad.
