On September 18, the finals of the 5th Haike Cup Global Overseas Chinese Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition was held in Chengdu. Under the Haike Cup, three overseas competitions were held in Asia Pacific (Osaka, Japan), Europe (Frankfurt, Germany) and North America (New York, USA) to allow Chinese who were overseas to be a part of innovation and entrepreneurship in Western China.

148 high-tech projects battled it out

Since May this year, the competition has attracted 714 entrepreneurship projects from overseas Chinese. The competition is categorised into six industries: electronic information, Internet and modern services, biomedicine, advanced manufacturing, new materials and energy saving, and environmental protection. After intense competition in the semi-finals, nine projects made it to the finals. These included a project that aims to develop targeted and innovative dual-specific antibody drugs for solid tumors such as breast cancer and gastric cancer, another project on automatic bidirectional green wave optimal signal control and industrialization of artificial intelligence, a project on remote childhood health information collection based on Internet cloud computing, a project to conduct large-scale preparation of transparent conductive film for flexible touch screens, and automatic AI financial big data analysis.

After fierce competition, Zhu Xiaodong with his project on targeted and innovative dual-specific antibody drugs for solid tumors such as breast cancer and gastric cancer won the first prize in the finals of the 5th Haike Cup Global Overseas Chinese Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition. The award will be presented at the opening ceremony of the 2019 Marine Science Conference and Tianfu Forum to be held tomorrow (September 19).

Overseas talent entrepreneurship competition concludes in  Sichuan

The 5th Haike Cup Global Overseas Chinese Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition aimed to achieve an effective docking of projects, talent and capital that would converge into a robust innovation and entrepreneurship system under ‘Haike Association’ to drive entrepreneurship sharing, roadshows, venture capital, project incubation, and encourage international high-end scientific and technological projects to settle in Western China and Sichuan to encourage innovation and entrepreneurship in these regions. Industrial vigour and talent has already transformed Sichuan’s economy into a robust one.

“This event has made me deeply aware of the potential and fast pace of innovation and entrepreneurship in Sichuan. Thank you for providing such a great platform for entrepreneurship projects and entrepreneurs. I will seize this opportunity to show my flair in the land of many talents that Sichuan is,” said Chen Yu, a contestant from Osaka, Japan, who hopes to make use of his advanced professional skills and work experience through the years to contribute to the development of Sichuan.

Luo Chao, Yunzhi Capital Partner, was the judge of the competition, carefully listening to introduction of their projects by entrepreneurs. He said that the Haike Cup contest had been successful in providing an effective communication platform for overseas high-tech projects, overseas high-level talents and top domestic investment institutions, while promoting innovation in overseas Chinese. It has also helped entrepreneurs with international top-notch scientific and technological projects to settle in the West and Sichuan. “We hope that more overseas Chinese will realize their dreams in China in the future,” he said.

Huang Guangyao, deputy general manager of Chengdu Wenlu Group, who has formerly served as the judge in Haike Cup finals, added: “This year’s competition involved a wider range of projects. Besides high-tech projects on biomedicine and electronic information, modern service industry projects have been added which made it all the more interesting.” He believes that these overseas Chinese entrepreneurs returned home with advanced technology, seeking technological exchanges, market cooperation and capital docking. At the same time, several entirely foreign projects also caught attention, which truly reflects the scope of the competition. The domestic environment for innovation and entrepreneurship is improving and various favorable policies have been rolled out. He hopes that top talents will return to China with innovative technology and impactful projects.
