Past•Present•Future: In celebration of New Age Gallery’s Twentieth Anniversary and Taiwan New Gallery Opening Exhibition

Text / Xia Yun

In any age, art, along with its value, gets revealed in its own evolution and lapse of time.

In celebration of its twentieth anniversary and the opening of the new gallery in Taiwan, New Age Gallery will hold an exhibition entitled Past•Present•Future from March 6, 2011 to March 28. This exhibition will give a full review of the history of Chinese art after the twentieth century along with a panoramic view of New Age Gallery, its abiding effort in adhering to business principles, keen insight in art and long-term perspective.

Based on history of art in general and academic history, this exhibition divides the history of Chinese art (In Chinese Mainland and Taiwan) in the twentieth century into five periods according to different historical background and the common cultural heritage and characteristics of development. The mainstream and its characteristics are introduced, from oil painters of the older generation, such as Xu Beihong, Liu Haisu, Lin Fengmian, Chang Yu, etc., and distinguished overseas Chinese painters, such as Zhao Wuji, Zhu Dequn, Zhao Chunxiang, etc., and to artists in the new system (the founding of the People’s Republic of China in Mainland China and KMT came into power in Taiwan), such as Wang Huaiqing, Luo Zhongli, Huang Zheming and many others, and further to the generation in the period of reform and opening up in China, like Zhang Xiaogang, Cai Guoqiang, Xu Bing, Zeng Fanzhi, Zhou Chunya, etc., and finally to the new artists of the ’70s in a globalized and digitalized era, such as Li Hui, Wang jiejie, Guang Yong, etc. The exhibition aims to review the past, reflect on the present and prepare for the future.

For over one year we have been busy with selecting a topic, making preparations, deciding on artists and their works. All the works are from New Age Gallery, collectors and our friends. There are not only masterpieces by our great masters in the past but also tour de force by artists in the new generation. Therefore, hopefully, this exhibition is a summary of the great effort New Age Gallery have made since its birth, a test of its business operation from the perspective of art history and art market, also an in-depth analysis of Chinese art. It will lead the audience back and froth through a particular time tunnel, highlighting the development of art and its value in the lapse of time.

Since its birth, New Age Gallery has been dedicated to contemporary art across the Strait. It stepped into Beijing and set up new art space in 798 art zone, and the new gallery was completed and came into operation in 2011, showing its effort to be more devoted to the development of contemporary art in China with the aim to open up new possibilities for young Chinese artists.

In this age when contemporary art has taken the first substantial step, this exhibition New Age Gallery spared no effort to bring to the public is undoubtedly significant both to the history and to the present.
