過去，山路崎嶇，馬兒就是水族人離不開的“鐵腳板”，馱貨物，代步行，噠噠的馬蹄聲，是深山最熟悉的伴奏。每逢“端節”，水族青年們喜歡騎馬走親訪友，馬兒越聚越多，那乾脆來場比賽吧！比速度，比技巧，端節賽馬的習俗，就這麼傳了下來。
In the past, rugged mountain paths made horses an indispensable mode of transport for the Shui people, helping them carry goods and travel. The sound of hoofbeats was a familiar accompaniment in the deep mountains. During the Duan Festival, Shui youths often rode horses to visit friends and family, leading to an increasing number of horses gathered for the occasion. This has prompted the establishment of horse racing competitions. Showcasing speed and skill, the tradition has been passed down to this day.
端節的隆重程度堪比漢族的春節。更厲害的是，各個村寨輪流過節，從頭至尾長達七七四十九天，拿下了“世界最長民族傳統節日”的世界紀錄！
The celebration of the Duan Festival is as grand as the Spring Festival for the Han people. Remarkably, villages take turns celebrating, stretching the festivities from start to finish for a total of 49 days, setting the world record for the “longest traditional ethnic festival.”
對馬的喜愛還被水族人巧妙地傾注在了刺繡作品之中。當其他繡品還在以絲線勾勒柔美，水族馬尾繡卻獨闢蹊徑——以三根堅韌的馬尾毛為骨，用絲線纏繞包裹成馬尾線。繡娘以馬尾線盤繡勾勒出蒼勁輪廓，用同色線將其固定，再用彩線填充斑斕肌理。猶如在布上“刻”出立體浮雕——魚兒躍出水面，蝴蝶振翅欲飛，太陽照亮希望。摸一摸，手感硬實，結實又耐用。
The love for horses is intricately woven into the embroidery of the Shui people. While other embroideries often employ silk threads to create delicate designs, Shui horsetail embroidery takes a unique approach -- using three sturdy strands of horsehair as the core, wrapped in silk thread to form a horsehair thread. The embroiderers use this horsehair thread to sketch robust outlines, fastening them with threads of similar color and filling in vibrant textures with colorful threads. The result resembles a three-dimensional relief on fabric -- fish leap from the water, butterflies flutter, and the sun illuminates with the light of hope. The texture is firm, durable, and resilient.
對水族來説，馬尾繡承載著重要意義。姑娘結婚時，母親會精心繡制背帶，飽含著美好的祝福。
For the Shui people, the horsetail embroidery carries significant meaning. When a daughter gets married, her mother will meticulously embroider a baby-carrying strap, infused with heartfelt blessings for her daughter.
如今，水族馬尾繡作為國家級非遺，還與苗族蠟染、布依族土布等等民族傳統手工藝組合，碰撞出新的火花。這些創新，讓古老的馬尾繡技藝在當代生活中繼續閃光，也推動著多彩的民族文化共同前行。
Today, the Shui ethnic group's horsehair embroidery, recognized as a national intangible cultural heritage, has combined with traditional ethnic crafts such as the Miao ethnic group's wax-dyeing and the Buyi ethnic group's handwoven cloth, sparking new innovations. These developments allow the ancient craft of horsehair embroidery to remain vibrant in contemporary life while advancing the diverse cultural heritage of these ethnic communities.
