廣西壯族自治區環江縣是中國唯一的毛南族自治縣，這裡世代聚居著毛南族人民。儺文化是毛南族兩大文化瑰寶之一，凝聚著這個古老民族的神秘與智慧。
Huanjiang, located in south China’s Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, is the only Maonan autonomous county in the country. The Maonan people have been residing here for generations. Nuo culture, one of the two cultural treasures of the Maonan people, embodies the mystery and wisdom of this ancient ethnic group.
儺面，是毛南族人們在木頭上以刀代筆雕刻出“千容百面”的儺神形象。毛南族儺面選用的是毛南山鄉特有的牛恩木，這種木頭質地輕軟、不易腐朽，更易保存。
Nuo mask is a carved representation of the Nuo deity with numerous appearances created by the Maonan people by “printing” on wood. The mask is made from a specific type of wood called niu’en from the region. The wood has a lightweight and soft texture and is resistant to decay, and is easier to preserve.
製作一副儺面，需要斧鑿、畫線、雕刻、拋光、上色等多個精細步驟，其中雕刻是最費時的環節，雕刻師傅運用各種工具精雕細琢出五官神情，刻畫出一個個活靈活現的儺面形象。，或金剛怒目，或溫文爾雅，或慈眉善目，極其傳神。
The production of a Nuo mask involves multiple intricate steps, including axe carving, line drawing, sculpting, polishing, and coloring. Among them, carving is the most time-consuming process, where the master carver meticulously crafts the facial features, depicting vivid and lifelike Nuo mask images. Some may have fierce and piercing eyes, while others exude an elegant and gentle demeanor, or radiate compassion and kindness. The level of detail achieved is truly remarkable and captures the essence of the deity.
毛南族儺舞、儺戲等這些民俗活動中，儺面可是必不可少的道具。毛南族人戴著“儺面”，又説又唱又跳，祈求民族生生不息，來年風調雨順、五穀豐登。
In the folk activities of the Maonan ethnic group, such as Nuo dance and Nuo opera, the Nuo mask is an indispensable prop. Wearing the Nuo mask, the Maonan people sing, chant, and dance, praying for the prosperity and continuity of their ethnic group, as well as for favorable weather conditions and abundant harvests in the coming year.
