Do you know that everyone worldwide spends an average of three years on the toilet?
November 19 is the World Toilet Day established by the United Nations. On this day, toilet-themed activities are held all over the world to encourage the public to improve sanitation and establish good hygiene practices.
Toilet is not only a place to offer convenience for people, but also an important measurement of the civilized degree of a country.
Singapore is the founding country of the World Toilet Organization, and home to the first World Toilet College. The college was created to change the "inferior work" perception of toilet cleaning, improve the working skills of related professionals and help boost their salaries.
In South Korea, toiletsare also called "make-up rooms," where people can chat and rest with friends in the toilets' rest area. These changes stem from the Public Toilet Act formulated by the government, which implements a strict evaluation and certification system for public toilets, leaving them with fresh new looks.
In order to cover up the sound of going to the toilet, people sometimes flush while using the facility. In Japan, some public toilets are featured with music play to reduce the waste of water resources and public facilities.
Bill Gates once said that everyone should have access to safe sanitation facilities. However, in the poorest and most marginalized areas of the world, the poor access to toilets is often ignored. At present, 3.5 billion people in the world lack access to safe toilets.
This year's World Toilet Dayfocuses on the theme of"Accelerating Change." Today, promoting the harmless treatment and resource utilization of toilet waste has become an important part of China's rural revitalization drive.
In the rural suburbs of Beijing, Reinvented Toilet which do not rely on a centralized sewer network are in use. They enable toilet sanitation systems not only to protect communities from pathogens in human waste, but also to convert them into things of practical valuesuch as energy, organic fertilizer, and usable water.
BengbuCity in east China's Anhui Provincehas seen the use of Omni-Processor, a self-circulating integrated manure treatment device. Covering only an area of about two basketball courts, the device can provide services for towns with about 500,000 people, realizing harmless treatment and resource utilization of manurein the remote regions.
A UN report showed that the world is still far away from achieving the goal of providing safe toilets and water for all by 2030. The hummingbird is the symbol of this year's World Toilet Day and World Water Day. In an ancient tale, a hummingbird, by carrying droplets of water in its beak, does what it can to fight a great fire. Its action, though very small, is helping solve a big problem.
