The retro double-decker tramcar runs slowly, passing through prosperous blocks and time-honored streets. Pedestrians in the surrounding streets flow like frames of images. Every street and scene are full of traces of time, offering a glance of the history of Hong Kong. Before each stop, Hong Kong trams sound “ding ding” as prompts, so they are also known as “Ding Ding”. As a unique city symbol of Hong Kong, Hong Kong Tramways was put into service in 1904 and now boasts a history of 118 years.
The year of 2022 marks the 25th anniversary of Hong Kong’s return to the motherland. Let’s get on a “Ding Ding” to tour the streets of Hong Kong with our camera.
The Hong Kong Tramways’ route is 13 kilometers long and runs between Shau Kei Wan Station and Kennedy Town Station on Hong Kong Island. Starting from east to west, we will first look at Causeway Bay, one of the three downtown areas in Hong Kong. Skyscrapers line up, shopping malls have a dazzling array of goods, wide streets are crowded with people, and local tea restaurants compete with global cuisine in wooing diners.
Just a short walk from Wan Chai Station, the Forever Blooming Bauhinia Sculpture and the Monument in Commemoration of the Return of Hong Kong to China stand together in the Golden Bauhinia Square, which witnessed the moment of the historic return in 1997.
Move on and meet the next destination of Central, which is the heart of Hong Kong, the political and commercial center, and the earliest developed area on Hong Kong Island. Many banks and multinational financial institutions are located here.
One hundred years ago, Hong Kong’s financial sector mainly relied on trade and exchange. In recent decades, its development has been closely linked to that of the Chinese mainland. The “one country, two systems” gives Hong Kong great institutional guarantee and flexibility, providing a win-win-win situation for foreign, domestic and local capital. The steady economic growth of the Chinese mainland has created strong driving force and financial demand for the development of Hong Kong as an international financial center.
Especially in this decade, Hong Kong has become a “super contact” in the development of the Belt and Road Initiative with its unique geographical advantages; The Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area develops as a whole to promote shared prosperity; Hong Kong is the world’s leading IPO fund-raising place, and more than half of the companies listed in Hong Kong are from the Chinese mainland.
When “Ding Ding” arrives in Sheung Wan, the streets are full of life. You may see a group of people “having a party” on No.128 retro tourist tram, with Chinese and foreign tourists enjoying the flavor of Hong Kong.
Across the sea from Sheung Wan, the golden-faced Hong Kong Palace Museum glows in the sun on the west coast of Hong Kong’s West Kowloon Cultural District. On July 2, the Hong Kong Palace Museum will officially open, exhibiting more than 900 collections from the Palace Museum in Beijing. Backed by the motherland and facing the world, Hong Kong will enjoy support to develop into a culture and arts exchange center between China and foreign countries, which is proposed in China’s “14th Five-Year Plan”.
During the “Ding Ding” tour of Hong Kong, one can get a glimpse of the city’s history, heritage and development. Over the past 25 years, Hong Kong and the Chinese mainland, with shared goals, have moved in the same direction and developed together. “The Pearl of the Orient” remains charming and will shine even brighter.
