Wenzhou Port’s cargo throughput has experienced a robust start in the new year! According to the information from the Wenzhou Port and Navigation Management Center on March 3, in January this year, the cargo throughput at Wenzhou Port reached 7.54 million tons, marking a significant increase of 63.87% compared to the same period last year. Among these figures, the throughput of foreign trade cargo amounted to 400,100 tons, showcasing a growth of 17.69%, while container handling reached 120,100 TEU, indicating a notable increase of 45.21%.

In recent years, Wenzhou has placed great emphasis on port management, continuously accelerating the development of Wenzhou as a regional hub for container shipping along near-sea routes and as a coastal domestic trade container hub. Efforts have been made to leverage the port’s driving role and resource aggregation functions, focusing on enhancing the overall efficiency of the city’s ports. By improving infrastructure within the port area, elevating the port’s operational capabilities, supporting the growth of industries near the port, and optimizing container operations, steady growth in cargo throughput at the port has been achieved, leading to breakthroughs in bulk cargo transportation and trade. For instance, in January this year, Wenzhou Port handled 2.7627 million tons of coal, marking a 50.85% year-on-year increase; 384,900 tons of petroleum, natural gas, and related products, showing a 44.75% increase year-on-year; and 1.1676 million tons of cement, reflecting a substantial 212.46% increase year-on-year.

In particular, in the realm of sea-rail intermodal transport, the port steadily enlarged the scale of its liners by exploring diverse sources of cargo. In addition to the existing“Yongkang-Wenzhou” container sea-rail liner, it gradually introduced new liners like“Nanchang-Wenzhou”,“Shangrao-Wenzhou”,“Lishui-Wenzhou”, and“Jinyun-Wenzhou”, transforming from a single line to a network. This transformation has facilitated the concentration of inland export goods towards Wenzhou through the influence of near-sea routes. In January this year, Wenzhou’s sea-rail intermodal container operations reached an uptick with a monthly volume of 1,008 TEUs, a remarkable 453.8% year-on-year increase.

It is learned that with the goal of accelerating the establishment of a near-sea international shipping center and a world-class port known as the“Golden South Wing”, Wenzhou will expedite the construction of the large-scale international goods collection and LCL base, Phase I of Yueqing Bay Area C, and Phase II of Zhuangyuan’ao. It will also coordinate the planning and construction of the southern port area of Wenzhou Port. Additionally, efforts will be made to promote multimodal transportation, ensure the regular operation of sea-rail intermodal special liners from Wenzhou to Nanchang and Shangrao, and establish a major southward and westward sea-rail intermodal channel serving Zhejiang, Fujian, and Jiangxi. Plans include maintaining stable operations for more than 15 near-sea routes and aiming for a port container throughput of over 1.5 million TEUs.(ZhongXin)
