On May 15th, with the successful installation of the final pipeline into the sea, the land-based water diversion project in Luqiao, Wenzhou's Dongtou District completed the sea-lake section for the first phase of the project after 50 days. Overcoming the challenge of laying pipes for water supply at sea, the project achieved three"leading positions" in terms of pipeline length, diameter, and innovative construction technology for similar projects in China. The pipeline, which stretches for 4,468 meters with a diameter of 1020mm, connects from Niyu Island in Dongtou district to Wangshantou pumping station on Dongtou island, across the sea through spiral-welded steel pipe and towed at the bottom of the sea, putting it at the forefront of pipeline length, diameter scale and construction technology in China.

According to Lin Jieliang, the project manager of the China Communications Construction Company, who undertook the project, the construction difficulty lied in welding and coating of pipelines. Coating was required on both the inside and outside of the pipes, and the construction had to face strong winds and waves in the sea. The innovative construction technology adopting the weight-bearing method of filling pipes with water and buoyancy coordination laid on the sea is also leading domestically for long-distance and large-diameter pipelines. Since the start of the project on March 29th, all builders have overcome the challenges and difficulties through early calculations in construction. Along the way, they have solved issues such as large tides, long tidal flats, and heavy pipelines. Despite adverse factors such as passing through waterways, ship grounding in shallow areas, and adverse weather, the workers put in efforts to complete the pipeline installation within the set time and accumulated experience for the subsequent work on the pipeline that links Dongtou and Luxi Island.

It is understood that the estimated investment for the first phase of the land-based water diversion project in Dongtou District is RMB 425 million, with a construction period of 24 months, and is expected to be completed by the end of July 2024. After the completion of the project, a water resource allocation pattern of"appropriate diversion and unified water supply" will be constructed in Dongtou District to thoroughly solve the problem of difficult access to clean water for residents on both the main and surrounding islands.(Shaolei)
