Nature and Memory - Yang Yongsheng Solo Exhibition
Curator: Zhao Li Exhibition time: April 12th-May 11th, 2008. Opening reception: Saturday, April 12th, 6pm. Exhibition place: C5 Art Center, No.5 Xi Wu Street, San Li Tun, Chaoyang District, Beijing.
Garcia Marquez, the author of One Hundred Years of Solitude, once wrote: “life is not what one lived, but what one remembers”. This may also be Yang Yongsheng’s understanding of life. Impervious to the logic of urban reality, he sees a city “as an element of nature, just like mountains and trees”. Yang’s works bear resemblance to classical Chinese paintings in that they “integrate cities into the nature, and blend artist’s personal emotions into the images”…Yang seems to be using art as a way to metaphorically interfere with reality. His works are not accurate reflections of lived experiences. Instead, they are “sentimental” expressions of what one remembers about contemporary life-its confusions, emptiness and fragility. Yang Yongsheng’s new solo show, featuring oil paintings made between 2006 and 2008, will open at C5 Art Center on April 12th.
