Deep-Hearted Devotion-Interview of Oil Painter Zhang Li, Professor with the PLA Art Academy

“Art should make people lofty.” This is deep rooted in Zhang Li’s heart. Born in 1958 in Beijing, Zhang joined the army in 1976 and enter the Fine Art Department of the PLA Art Academy through examinations in 1979. After graduation in 1983, he worked in the academy as a teacher. Now, he is a member of Chinese Artist Association and a professor of the Fine Art Department of PLA Art Academy. His paintings were frequently exhibited in various domestic and international exhibitions and won prizes many times, many of which were collected by domestic and foreign art museums, galleries and collectors.
Previously, I often saw his paintings in various exhibitions and picture albums. His style of oil painting consists realism of unadornment and grace, as well as freehand brushwork style.
Recently, I interviewed him at his large and bright atelier in Haidian District of Beijing. He was working at a painting of a girl in Tibet. The tall and gentle man speaks with excitement and acts in scholar manner, indicating his love to the art.
He throws himself into his painting and likes to express his feelings he collected from real life through painting. He feels, and so do I, that only the paintings that the painters themselves like can touch audiences, and just the paintings that painters do not want to sell are the paintings people want most to buy.
Rembrandt noted that reputation is more important than wealth while freedom is more important than reputation. Yes, only those with relaxed minds, free hand and free color in a free circumstance can create arts with strong vitality and freedom. From Zhang Li’s paintings, we can see that he is influenced by domestic and foreign artist thinking. He said he is never annoyed while painting and he is happy with his patience. According to him, speculations in art market is not important and the first thing first is to paint high-quality paintings. His wife also gives full supports to his work, making sound environment for his painting.
In general, some of his paintings reach his unprecedented high level, expressing the excellent images of women and girls of Chinese minority through his realistic painting style and romantic imagination. He uses deep and thick color to express the characteristics of figures and uses abundant and various methods to create vivid and powerful images. He seldom overelaborates details with great creativity and realism spirits.
I believe every artist should have his or her unique style and inject humanism to his or her paintings.
Augeuste Rodin’s teacher Lecongde Boisbaudran pointed out that a painting is not necessarily beautiful, but it must be a feeling painting. Zhang Li’s paintings embody his sincere feelings and demonstrate beauty, showing his love for the figures in his paintings.
Exhibitions Zhang Li Attended:
1981: National Fine Art Exhibition.
1982: National Fine Art Exhibition.
1987: National Fine Art Exhibition.
1989: The first China Oil Painting Exhibition. After the exhibition, his paintings was sent to Japan for exhibitions.
1989: The third Asia Fine Art Exhibition. After the exhibition, his paintings were collected in Japanese Fukuoka Gallery.
