將近半個世紀之前，唐納·賈德為繪畫發了訃告。雖然賈德的斷言從未成真，但堅持作畫的藝術家們一直在試圖穿越這個擁有千年曆史的藝術形式的疆界。
“潛溢”的策展人——Cecilia Freschini 茜茜 寫道：“時間流淌，其中顯現的某幾幀畫面往往比我們的整個記憶還要清晰。面對羅曉冬的作品，我們很容易進入一個沒有分秒的時空，其中，塵世無聲，一個沒有前文後義的恢宏空洞在此盤踞。……藝術是鄭重的，藝術家需要對重大社會問題有所回應……（羅的畫面）是我們時代的點滴，他審視這些點滴，也審視這個時代，要我們睜開眼睛，從心‘潛溢’。”
場景可以是一張長凳，吐納時間流逝；可以是故宮，卻似頹唐蒼涼的廢墟風景；或僅僅是新聞事件中擷取的一幅畫面。用他獨特的技藝——沾滿顏料的刮刀在畫布上留下不規則的三角形，以及黑白灰的著色，羅曉冬不僅僅抓住其中懾人的“無聲”和逼人的“空洞”，也撫摩到了其中的普遍情愫，同時質疑我們體認外界事物的方式。
在羅曉冬最近的作品中，他還嘗試引入畫面的載體作為他視覺語法的重要一部分：通過畫布的分割，或者畫幅不同的比例和角度，謀取新的平衡。羅曉冬的意象往往剝離于它們的語境，藝術家以此建立與世界的聯繫，卻又依靠設色的簡化和細節的模糊，避免寓言式的或現實主義的暗示。
羅曉冬出生於大西北，和許多藝術家一樣，有著學院派的背景。從西安美術學院畢業後，他選擇與依然鼎盛的社會主義現實主義分道揚鑣。從最初的抽象表現主義的嘗試到今天他日益成熟的個人風格，羅曉冬將他在畫面中的探索稱作“冒險”，他樂此不疲。此展是他在中國的第二個個展。他之前的個人展覽包括2007年東京的“我的世界”和去年在上海和南京的“空城計”。

Our whole life is series of moments and sensations, where past, present and future lose their meanings and single images stand out, as crystallized thoughts, more clear than memories. Facing Luo Xiaodong’s work, we easily enter a timeless dimension, in which dwell a mortal silence and an enormous emptiness. Nevertheless, is not disorientation that we feel, but the familiarity of a common experience. According to the artist, painting should generate a new understanding. We watch but as a matter of fact, we see nothing, and all turns back to zero. “The way we view the world determines the way we lead our life and make a living. We do need to think about it.” As articulated by these words, Luo Xiaodong, is highly conscious of what it means to do art. Art is a serious and deep matter, and the artists should respond to major social problems. The cities in the process of modernization and the natural environment are two of his main concerns. The artist has softened the dramatic force of his early subjects, but his message is even stronger. “Postcard”, “Mountain”, “Rope”, “Souvenir” are pieces of our time, that he aims to review, suggesting us to pay much attention and make a move within.
