  • Well, probably the most common way they learn about China is they go into a store and they look at something they are gonna buy, and it’s made in China. But I think the most people learn outside of Washington, and one always has to distinguish what’s going on in national security and Washington policy, and what’s going on among the American people. I think they hear about in terms of occasional crises, or they hear about aspects of the Chinese culture. But I think at the same time, there is not, interestingly enough, a particular racial animosity in the US towards Chinese Americans, it’s very different situation with African Americans and Hispanics. So you have an interesting constellation of factors here, where there is not, in enough itself, if you were to talk to a typical American, whatever that is, about China hostility, but when you get into political issues, then you start getting certain kinds of responses, and those cause more problems.
