The word we talk about today is“網約車”——online car-hailing.
In recent years, some car-hailing apps have been becoming popular in China’s major cities. Through those mobile applications, passengers can submit a trip request and then easily book a ride from the nearest private car owners or taxi drivers. However, such apps have been a topic of controversy, for they have been challenging the traditional taxi business and moreover, it is illegal for private cars to operate as taxis in China. In Oct. 2015, a draft regulation for the taxi sector and taxi hailing service was published by the Ministry of Transport and was open for public opinion.
