The highly respected Kirghiz trainer and his falcon sit in an almost ceremonial stance, and even though the falcon’s eyes are blindfolded, the aged man’s age-worn eyes are as sharp as the falcon’s eyes.
There is a mysterious and vast land in the northwestern frontier of China - Aheqi County of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, where the Kyrgyz people have been living for generations, and which is known as the”land of falconry”. In this ancient land, the Kyrgyz people have inherited an ancient and mysterious culture - falconry culture.
In the tradition of the Kyrgyz, falconry is a symbol of honour and courage. The falconry culture of the Kyrgyz is one of their unique national traditions, and this custom has been included in the list of intangible cultural heritage at the national level. The practice of falconry originates from the long-term nomadic life of the Kyrgyz and is an important part of their productive life. A good falcon can feed a family, so the skill of falconry has an important place among the Kyrgyz.
Trainers are the core characters in the Kirghiz falconry culture. They have been handed down from generation to generation and have mastered the unique skill of falcon training. From selecting young eagles, feeding and domesticating them to releasing them for hunting, every link unites the wisdom and sweat of the trainers. For the Kyrgyz, the falcon is not a hunting tool, but a close family member, but also their pride and honour. Between them and the falcon, they have established a tacit understanding and trust beyond words.
The relationship between the Kyrgyz people and the falcon is harmonious and symbiotic. Trainers respect the habits of the falcons and value their freedom, and they let them return to the sky when they are five years old to breed their heirs. Until then, the falcons return the nurturing love of man with their loyalty and courage, a pact between man and falcon that has been in place for generations. This deep emotion between man and eagle has become the most touching chapter in the culture of Kyrgyz falconry.
Now, with the advancement of modernisation and the improvement of wildlife protection awareness, the falconry culture of the Kyrgyz people is also facing the challenge of inheritance. Nevertheless, the relevant departments are still actively taking measures to ensure the continuation of this valuable cultural heritage in a better and more standardised way. It is gratifying that more and more young people have begun to pay attention to and participate in the protection and inheritance of this traditional culture. By learning the art of falconry training and participating in falconry cultural activities, they are giving new life and vigour to this ancient culture.
