Sports film "Challengers" tops North American box office on opening weekend

Amazon MGM Studios' romantic sports film "Challengers" led the North American box office with an estimated cume of 15 million U.S. dollars on its opening weekend, figures from data firm Comscore showed Sunday.

Directed by Luca Guadagnino, the film stars Zendaya, Josh O'Connor and Mike Faist, who play three entangled tennis players.

The film has earned an approval rating of 87 percent based on 238 reviews to date on the review-aggregation website Rotten Tomatoes, and a "B+" on an "A+" to "F" scale from audiences polled by the market research firm CinemaScore.

Another newcomer, Lionsgate's family drama "Unsung Hero" opened in second place, taking in 7.75 million dollars this weekend.

Rounded out the top 3, Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures' monster film "Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire" earned 7.2 million dollars on its fifth weekend. The film has grossed 181.7 million dollars in North America with a global cume of 519.3 million dollars through Sunday.
