Dutch skaters bag three golds on last day of World Cup speed skating in Calgary
Dutch skaters demonstrated their dominance on the last day of the third leg of the ISU speed skating World Cup series in Calgary on Sunday by taking three of the four gold medals on offer.
Jutta Leerdam continued her perfect streak in the women's 1,000 meters, clocking one minute and 12.81 seconds to grab her third consecutive title of the season. Kimi Goetz of the United States took the silver in 1:13.53, with the bronze going to Austrian Vanessa Herzog in 1:13.56.
Later on Sunday, Leerdam's compatriots Irene Schouten and Marijke Groenewoud finished first and third in the women's mass start, while American Mia Kilburg settled for second.
Hein Otterspeer also made a contribution to the Netherlands' golden tally as he crossed the line in 1:07.28 to win the men's 1,000m race. Laurent Dubreuil and Antoine Gelinas-Beaulier, both from Canada, were second and third with 1:07.30 and 1:07.32.
In Sunday's last event, Andrea Giovannini of Italy posted a winning time of 7:53.04 for the title of the men's mass start, followed by Peter Michael from New Zealand and Vitaliy Chshigolev of Kazakhstan.
