India will soon become a major producer of C-295 transport aircraft, said Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday, as he laid the foundation of an aircraft manufacturing facility in the western state of Gujarat.

The C-295 aircraft manufacturing facility at Vadodara district will be the first aircraft plant in the private sector in India.

It will be utilized for manufacturing 40 C-295 aircraft for the Indian Air Force (IAF) through collaboration between Tata Advanced Systems Limited and Airbus Defence and Space of Spain.

Highlighting the increased demand for passenger and cargo aircraft in the country, Modi said that India would need more than 2,000 aircraft in the next 15 years.
