81 pct of U.S. adults worried about recession hitting this year: survey

After two years of the coronavirus pandemic, a recession and a rapid recovery, Americans are worried that the economy may swiftly decline once again, reported CNBC on Tuesday.

Some 81 percent of adults said they think the U.S. economy is likely to experience a recession in 2022, according to a CNBC and Acorns Invest in You survey, which was conducted by Momentive on March 23-24.

"Certain groups are anticipating a potential economic downturn more than others," the survey found, noting that Republicans are more likely to think there will be a recession than Democrats.

The last recorded U.S. recession took place in 2020, when the coronavirus pandemic spurred mass shutdowns and layoffs across the United States. Since, however, the U.S. economy has seen a stunning recovery.

The National Bureau of Economic Research defines recession as "significant decline in economic activity that is spread across the economy and lasts more than a few months."
