"The Lost City" tops North American box office on opening weekend

Paramount Pictures' action-adventure comedy film "The Lost City" led ticket sales at the North American box office with better-than-expected 31 million U.S. dollars on its opening weekend, according to studio figures released by measurement firm Comscore on Sunday.

Directed by Aaron and Adam Nee and starring Sandra Bullock and Channing Tatum, the film follows a best-selling romance novelist who is kidnapped by an eccentric billionaire and teams up with her handsome cover model to uncover the ancient lost city's treasure in an epic jungle adventure.

"The Lost City" holds an approval rating of 76 percent based on 143 reviews to date on review-aggregation website Rotten Tomatoes. Movie audiences gave it a "B+" on CinemaScore.

Warner Bros. Pictures' superhero film "The Batman" moved to second place after three consecutive weeks as North American box office champion. The tentpole, based on the DC Comics character Batman, took in 20.5 million dollars on its fourth weekend for a North American cume of 332 million dollars. The film has garnered 672.9 million dollars worldwide, including around 17.9 million dollars from the Chinese mainland.

Rounding out the top 3, an Indian Telugu-language period action-drama film "RRR" ("Rise Roar Revolt") opened this weekend in North America with 9.5 million dollars.
