It is historically known as the "First and Greatest Pass Under Heaven", "the First Mountain Pass on the West of Yellow River" and "the Key to the Frontier Gate"; It is the best-preserved ancient military castle in China till today, and a battleground contested by many military strategists since ancient times; It remains and thrives for thousands of years; It is Jiayu Pass, the "First and Greatest Pass Under Heaven".
Located at the foothill of Jiayu Mountain in the southwest of Jiayuguan City, Gansu, Jiayu Pass is a trapezoidal building whose eastern half is narrow and western half wide. There are three towers on the city wall, namely, the east, middle and west towers, which are full of momentum. Besides being the "First and Greatest Pass Under Heaven", Jiayu Pass is also one of the three wonders of the Great Wall of China, standing majestically beside Qilian Mountains.
Sitting majestically at the western end of the Great Wall, the Pass City of Jiayu Pass features magnificence and craggedness. and is an important military fortress on the ancient Great Wall defense line, the first pass in Hexi, and a necessary pass on the ancient Silk Road. In the Ming Dynasty, to enter and exit the customs from here, you must show your customs clearance certificate.
In the third year of Jiajing's reign (1524), due to its inability to manage the Western Regions, the then emperor ordered Jiayu Pass to be closed, abandoning a large area of land and cutting off the Silk Road completely. Jiayu Pass, a living witness of the disputes and infusion between the Central Plains and the Western Regions, features a blending of solemness and resplendence.
