The maritime economy in Xiamen, Fujian province, generated 228.16 billion yuan ($32.97 billion) in 2017, up by 10 percent year-on-year, according to the local government's Report on Xiamen's Blue Economy Development (2017).

The report states that last year Xiamen spared no effort to nurture its emerging marine industry, promote the transformation and upgrading of the traditional marine industry as well as protect the marine ecological environment.

At present, Xiamen is home to 25 enterprises involved in the marine industry, nine of which are listed companies.

The 2017 edition of the annual World Ocean Week in Xiamen attracted more than 2,000 enterprise representatives and 200 officials and scholars from 43 countries and regions along the Maritime Silk Road, which strengthened Xiamen's maritime cooperation with other countries.

This year, Xiamen is focusing on improving its blue economy's competitiveness and further enhancing international exchanges and cooperation, according to Wu Guoliang, deputy director of Xiamen's oceans and fisheries bureau.
