He was born in 1956 in Yangzhong, Jiangsu. In 1985, he graduated from the major of fine arts history and theory of the Fine Arts Department at the Nanjing University of the Arts and received a master's degree. He won the Liu Haisu Scholarship twice during his studies in the school. In 1985, he was assigned to the People's Fine Arts Publishing House and served as the editor and director of the Classical Art Editorial Department. In 2002, he was transferred to the Research Institute of Traditional Chinese Painting and served as the director and researcher of the Research Department. In 2004, he was transferred to the National Art Museum of China and served as the director of the Academic Department I and the deputy editor-in-chief of the monthly National Art Museum of China Journal. In 2010, he was transferred to the National Museum of China and served as the curator assistant. From November 2010 to August 2016, he was appointed Deputy Director of the National Museum of China. He is currently a researcher of the National Museum of China.
