----By Anthony Stones FRBS
In the year 2008 Professor Bao Lin was inspired to make a serious of powerful drawings, in all about 500 of them.
They were done over the winter of 2008 under compelling emotional pressure in reaction to tragic events both nationally and in Prof. Bao’s private life. The horrifying Sichuan earthquake was the main public event. The deaths of several friends under tragic circumstances effected him on a personal level. As the drawings were done he displayed them on his studio wall making a large mural, and they provoked a continuing dialogue between himself and the drawings.
The constant theme of the series was a drawing of a human face in close up and each one with an oxygen tube in the right nostril. They all have expressions of stress, pain and discomfort. They are drawn quickly in a broad, confident technique which alters depending on the state of the professor’s feelings at that moment.
Each drawing is from the heart and mediated by his artistic conscience and skilled draftsmanship, so that instead of merely illustrating his personal unhappiness they make a general statement about human mental pain and a serious but disturbing art work.
