It could be difficult for us to tell if a painting is a work of a French or a Spanish artist, yet when we come to a museum with thousands of paintings, we all can easily point out the Chinese ones. The particularity of the materials used and of the way of expression in ink and wash painting makes it a unique representative of Chinese art.
Since the 20th century, the globalization has become irresistible. With the popularity of oil painting, acrylic and other materials, the ink and wash painting has been under attack as never before. New types of art emerge in an endless stream, many ink painters attempt constantly to search between traditional and modern materials and skills, and they finally got to overpass the limits of the traditional Chinese painting and made ink and wash evolve independently into a brand new art type which is full of the spirits of our time—New Ink and Wash.
In recent years, while everybody is enthusiast about the living state of traditional art, I started to realize the necessity of organizing an exhibition of new ink and wash. This time I’m honored to have Li Jin, Liu Qinghe, Lü Peng, Peng Wei, He Jianguo, Shao Ge, Wang Jinsong, Wu Yi, Yu Jidong and Zhu Wei to join our group exhibition “Scent of Ink”. Among them there are art professors and independent artists, they all play a most active role in the world of Chinese contemporary ink and wash. With their works, we get to basically see a complete picture of the present conditions of this new art world in China.
The work of these artists bring to us once again the charm of ink and wash, and they also provide many new possibilities for the development of traditional art in a contemporary context.
